Algal blooms

Diatom surf zone blooms caused by fresh water & nutrients from ocean outfalls

Severe foam, discoloration and sludge lines at the high water mark can be caused by a combination of strong winds, heavy rains and high nutrient levels in the recieving waters of ocean outfalls.

Clean Ocean Foundation researchers have been in close contact with the EPA and am assisting them in their investigations by providing photos of the event and monitoring for further developments. The EPA currently believes there could be a range of causes for such events including potentially sludge activation processes at wastewater treatment plants .
