Class A Upgrade 2007

Documents show construction must be completed by 2010

After many years of community, government and media pressure the Bracks government has matched the promise of the Liberals and Greens for an immediate upgrade of the Carrum Treatment Plant to Class A.

'The proposal would cut the discharge of sewage into the ocean at Gunnamatta by 80 per cent. '

The Clean Ocean Foundation is excited but cautious, considering this is the third time the community on the Mornington Peninsula has been promised a Class A upgrade. The first was to be completed in 2002. The second launched in December 2002 was to be completed by 2006.

CONSTRUCTION & COMPLETION DATES

Research into the existing works approval has raised questions regarding the planned upgrade of the Carrum Treatment Plant to Class A by 2012 at cost of $300 million.

Page 15 of the existing works aprroval to upgrade Carrum shows a 4 year construction period and a $169 million cost for the Class A upgrade ('tertiary filtration upgrade') including $47 for the Ammonia reduction upgrade.

The $47m has already been spent on ammonia and construction on this phase is almost complete thus the complete job should cost far less and be finished much sooner:

HOW MUCH IT SHOULD COST: $122 million

HOW LONG IT SHOULD TAKE: 4 years (completed by 2010)
