Save the Yarra - Save Gunnamatta?

The Yarra River option - diverting future Class A water from the ETP for environmental flows

Yarra river

The Victorian State Government is considering the option of piping Class A water from the Eastern Treatment Plant at Carrum north to the Yarra River just below Yering Gorge. This scheme would have the following advantages:

  • Reduce pollution at Gunnamatta, St. Andrews and Rye Ocean Beaches

  • Improve river health of the Yarra

  • Potable water from Sugarloaf being used for Yarra environmental flows would be added to the Melbourne region drinking supplies

  • Recycled Class A water available along the ETP-Yarra pipe for industry, parks, sports fields, housing, etc. in Eastern Melbourne.

The Eastern Treatment Plant Class A upgrade, to be completed in 2012, has not yet begun. The Yarra River option can only happen if a Class A or potable upgrade of the plant takes place.

If the health of the Yarra river system can be guaranteed following the addition of Class A environmental flows, it is the view of the Clean Ocean Foundation that this proposal should be considered as an beneficial option for the use of recycled water.
